Ahhhh...the Cuernavaca Loop. One of our favorite scenic grimpeur loops in Austin, TX and a great add-on loop to any ride out west. What's fantastic about the almost five-mile loop (+/-1,000 ft of climbing) is that it offers lots of different environs in a short stretch of cycling: townie "Keep Austin Weird" vibes, Texas Hill Country scrub, lake woodlands, vacation lake houses, and toney Southwest subdivision homes & mansions.
What we really love about the Cuernavaca Loop is that it offers completely different climbing experiences depending on whether you start your descent via Cuernavaca Dr. or River Hills Rd from Bee Cave Rd (TX 2244).
Ascending from the bottom up on Cuernavaca Road, it starts off steep but once you hit the subdivisions, it's just a constant, steady grind until you hit the long, last steep pitch up to Bee Cave Road. Ascending from the bottom up River Hills Road just starts UP. It pitches immediately and when you hit the first left turn, it keeps going up with different ramps through the lake woodlands. Once you hit the Texas Hill Country section, it is still steep climbing but there's no shade (fun in the summer). Eventually, you hit the last steep pitch and then the gradient flattens a bit as you wind through the very toney Southwest subdivisions. One last turn and you're back at Bee Cave Rd.
Another great thing about Cuernavaca Loops is that there are a variety of climbing routes off the main loop. #HILLPEATS
One time our Amigo FIGUDAM had us climb up Cuernavaca Dr. but suddenly we turned left on Delgado Way, down to the bottom of Olympus Drive, and then it was grimpeur time: non-stop climbing UP Olympus Dr to North Marly Way. Its a long series of steep ramps all the way up. It was gorgeous FUN. #InYourFaceClimbing
Another time we got to ride with #PDX friends from The Athletic and Team Woolly Mammoth and we took a left off the ascent up River Hills, jumped a fence, and then hit a classic ATX WALL. +20%. It hurt. THX Patrick!
Then after an end of cross season dinner at a restaurant on Commons Ford Road, we started adding that descent down to Commons Ford Ranch Park & climb back up to the mix.
