That magic hour. The light is perfect. You're riding gravel. Bliss.
But are you close to the ride's end? Or are you chasing the sunset home trying to finish in the gloaming before it gets dark? We've developed an affinity for late afternoon, early evening gravel grinders that end with a full gas effort to get home before dark. Like breakaways in bike races, we rarely make it. But ahhhhhhhhhhh the effort.
Sometimes we like riding on gravel roads at night. But sometimes we get spooked. By the deer jumping in front of our lights. Or that random BIG country DAWG materializing out of nowhere on your back wheel. SPRINT! And the weird hallucinations start happening.
Or are you racing a 200 miler and you've got some tough night racing ahead? It's sunset. It's a gorgeous sunset. But your mind and body are shattered. You're in a dark hole, hallucinating. Your body is cramping. All you can do is pedal. Your mind is numb.
We've never done it but we've seen the last checkpoint and finish line carnage up close: delirium, happiness, hugs, wasted bodies, strung-out minds...
RESPECT to those who can do it. And RESPECT to those who just enjoy the magic hour on gravel. This cuppa's for you.
Ride your bike. Drink great coffee.
